Refrigerant Recharge

Done right — leak found, charge weighed in, performance verified.

A correct refrigerant recharge requires more than 'add until cold.' It means finding the leak, repairing it, evacuating the system, and weighing in the manufacturer's specified charge. GERARDO HVAC LLC is EPA-certified and recharges systems across Fort Dodge, Webster City, Humboldt, and Eagle Grove, Iowa.

Signs You Need Refrigerant Recharge

  • AC blowing warm air or barely cooling
  • Frost or ice on refrigerant lines
  • Long run times and high humidity indoors
  • Recent coil or line repair that needs to be recharged
  • System recently replaced and needs commissioning charge
  • Heat pump struggling in both heating and cooling modes

How I Approach Refrigerant Recharge

Before any refrigerant goes in, I confirm the leak is repaired or that the system is sealed. Then I evacuate to a deep vacuum, weigh in the correct charge for the equipment, and verify performance with superheat and subcool measurements. You get a system that actually performs, not just one that 'works for now.'

What's Included

  • R-410A, R-22 retrofit, R-32, and R-454B recharge
  • Vacuum evacuation to manufacturer spec
  • Weighed-in charge with electronic scale
  • Superheat and subcool verification
  • Performance test after recharge
  • EPA-compliant handling and recovery

Why Choose GERARDO HVAC LLC

Most under-charged systems are also poorly diagnosed. I won't add refrigerant to a leaking system without addressing the leak — and I won't overcharge to make a reading look better, because that damages the compressor.

Refrigerant Recharge — FAQs

How much does it cost to recharge an AC?

It depends on the refrigerant type and how much the system holds. R-22 is significantly more expensive than R-410A. I quote before starting.

Will recharging fix my AC?

Only if the cause of low refrigerant is addressed. Otherwise it'll be low again in weeks or months.

Do you handle R-22 systems?

Yes — repair and recharge where possible. R-22 is no longer produced, so on older systems I'll honestly discuss whether retrofit or replacement makes sense long-term.

Why do you weigh the charge instead of just topping off?

Weighing in the manufacturer's spec is the only way to know the system is correctly charged. 'Topping off by feel' is how systems get over- or under-charged, both of which damage the compressor.
