Evaporator Coil Cleaning for Fort Dodge and Webster County
Summer humidity along the Des Moines River valley keeps central air running long hours. Dirty outdoor coils, weak capacitors and low airflow across the indoor coil are common reasons a Fort Dodge system cools poorly or freezes up.
Fort Dodge is my home base, so most addresses in town and nearby Webster County are a short drive.
Signs You May Need Evaporator Coil Cleaning
- AC runs constantly but rooms never get cool enough
- Ice forming on the coil or refrigerant lines
- Musty smell when the AC runs
- Higher than normal humidity indoors
- Visible dirt or biofilm on the coil fins
- Frequent need to clear the condensate drain
How the Visit Works
I access the coil through the cabinet, protect the surrounding components, apply an evaporator-safe foaming cleaner, allow it to break down dirt and biofilm, then rinse and let it drain properly through the condensate line. I also clear the drain line and float switch and verify post-clean superheat.

Common Questions
How often should the evaporator coil be cleaned?
Every 2-3 years for most homes, more often in dusty homes, homes with pets, or homes with low-MERV filters.
Will cleaning the evaporator coil get rid of musty smells?
Yes, usually — most musty AC smells come from biofilm on the coil or in the drain pan.
Can a dirty coil cause ice buildup?
Absolutely. Restricted airflow over a dirty coil drops the coil temperature below freezing.
